Carlyn Apley    The Power of Visual Thinking Strategies    40 minutes    All levels

Visual Thinking Strategies is an instructional framework for all teachers that creates an environment of student led learning that turns traditional education on its head. Using the power of observation, students participate in facilitated discussions of art (paintings, photographs, etc.) to answer three essential questions. VTS makes education more engaging, inclusive, and equitable. Making the choise to use this as a part of your curriculum will start a fire in giving students of all ages (preK-college) and even adults the needed supports to develop critical thinking, visual literacy, communication and collaboration skills.

Creating your own sketchbooks not only teaches students bookbinding techniques but gives you the freedom to provide a variety of quality paper within that sketchbook. Participants will create their own personalized sketchbook.

Participants in this hands-on workshop will create a 12 foot high Keeper of the Plains filled with Kansas symbolism. The project integrates an understanding of the Visual Arts in relation to history and indigenous cultures. Lesson extensions will be provided to make connections between the Visual Arts and Writing and Social Studies. The unit was designed for 3-4th grade but is open ended to allow for multiple grade adaptation.

Mac Atha    Jean-Michael Basquiat    80 minutes    $7.00    Elem, MS

In this workshop, we will explore Hatian-American artist Jean-Michel's work and create a portrait in his style. A wide variety of materials were used by Basquiat in his portraits in order to created different colors, lines, symbols, and words to convey different emotions and aspects of an individual. Come explore tempera sticks and oil pastels with us while we discover one of the most influential artists of the 20th century! (You will be able to keep all supplies and take home your creation).

Karen Gerety Folk    Katherine Morse    Alyssa Passomore Creating a Community of Allies: Museum Educators and Anti-Biased Training    40 minutes    All, Museum

Working with a diverse collection and a range of exhibitions of artwork by living artists creates opportunities for rich discussion. How to show respect for different points of view, to welcome individuals and groups into our spaces, and to adapt to changes in cultural climate is an ongoing journey for our long-term volunteer educators in the docent program. Learn examples of how to “bring people in” rather than calling them out, and join our conversations as we create cultural connections and continue honing accuracy with contextual information. Examples of contemporary art will be shared with handouts and links provided.



Tranda Strnad    Resin Art for Beginners    40 minutes    $8.00    MS, HS

During this hands on workshop we will explore how to use resin in the classroom. We will also look at some lesson plan ideas. Each participant will get to create their own piece and pick their own mold to take home!

Lori Santos    Make it a Pecka Kucha    40 minutes    All levels

Twenty slides in six minutes. Each presenter will provide an overview of their perspective, on what art education needs, through the lens of one contemporary topic in art education. Impactions for classroom teaching and learning will be discussed.

Session 2B- Friday October 29th 11:00-11:40 am:

Dr. Charity-Mika Woodard    Self Care in a Time of Crisis    40 minutes    All levels

Discussion on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies to support students, including trauma-informed care strategies. The presenter will also share ideas for educator self-care during this uniquely taxing moment in time. Although this presentation is steeped in research it will provide practical ideas that are easy to implement in the classroom setting. They will explore how to help students and teachers explore the emotions they are truly feeling. Therefore, helping them to better care for themselves (Palmer, 2009).

Liz Langdon    Lori Santos    Misuses and Misunderstandings of Indigenous Cultural Images: Problematizing Native American Representation in Kansas    40 minutes    All levels

Presenters will show misuses and misunderstandings of Indigenous cultural images in Kansas. Participants will problematize the images of Native American in their community through participating in a group mind mapping activity. We will work collaboratively to deconstruct this information to transform our understandings, working toward decolonizing our art curriculum.

Session 2C- Friday October 29th 10:20-11:40 am:

Liz Kowalchuk    Fun with Flags: Promoting Peace and Compassion    80 minutes    All levels

Flags have been used as symbols, signaling devices, and decoration. Although frequently associated with patriotism or warfare, they also convey identity, messages, and wishes across cultures. Artists have been interested in the symbolic and historic aspects of flags as well. In this workshop, we will discuss the use of flags in a variety of contexts and create flags that promote peach and compassion.

Diana Faris (AMACO remote)    Kathy Skaggs    Press and Print on Moist Clay    80 minutes    All levels

In this workshop we will make stamps to press and print on moist clay slabs, creating color and texture at the same time. Once slabs are textured, we will build simple cylinders which can be modified to create a wide variety of forms. Bring a shoebox or other item to transport home for firing! This virtual workshop will be facilitated locally with hands-on materials!

Meg Carte    Kusama Collage    80 minutes    $2.00    Elem

In this workshop, you will create a collage of flowers in the style of contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama. Using a variety of colored sulphite paper, liquid tempera paint, q-tips, round stampers and large hole punches, this colorful artwork is an engaging way to ignite everyone's imagination.

Johnna Smith    Cultivating Creativity: Using 3-D Pens to Foster Innovative Thinking    80 minutes     $10.00    All levels

Have you always wanted to use 3-D Printing Pens in the classroom, but you’re not too sure about how to make it work? This workshop gives you the hands-on experience of using 3-Doodlers while providing you with resources to successfully implement their use in the classroom. Immediately see the benefits of self-directed discovery and have fun simultaneously! By making student's thinking more visible, even those with limited literacy skills are better able to communicate ideas. In this step-by-step demonstration, learn to use Adobe Photoshop to edit & stylize photography, expertly collage and blend images together to then combine with and customize typography to produce a professional, print-ready book cover design including the front, back, and spine. Time willing we will then use that finished work to digitally create convincing mock-ups showing a finished book resting nicely on a shelf or table! Bring paper and pencil for planning. If you have a device with Photoshop installed, you can work along with the demonstration.

Session 3A- Friday October 29th 1:20-2:00pm: (Select A and B OR Session C)

Beth Burns    Cloning Yourself: Making and Using Video Tutorials for a Faux Flipped Art Room    40 minutes    Elem, MS

Ever wish you could clone yourself so you could be doing a demo while also providing hands-on help to your students while they work? Ever wish you didn’t have to give the SAME instructions to every class you teach (25 times or more!?!?!?)? You can do these things and more! We will use several video-making techniques to help you be two places at once in your classroom. Bring your own device(s). We will use various vide-making platforms, using laptops, cell phones, and Ipads (I will provide a few iPads if you don’t have your own). Feel free to bring other devices you like to use.

Session 3B- Friday October 29th 2:10-2:50 pm:

Beth Burns    Creating with Alcohol Inks    40 minutes    $10.00    All levels

Alcohol inks are all the rage these days. If you’ve never tried them, this workshop is for you!. If you have tried them and just want to continue to explore, come on! This workshop will be an introduction to using alcohol inks as a creative outlet for teachers and older students. Participants will be introduced to the inks and have a chance to use them in numerous ways on various surfaces. An apron or paint shirt would be a good idea as they can be messy!

Still pulling your hair out trying to apply the “new” national art standards to your curriculum? Kansas adopted the National Visual Art Standards in 2015, but switching your mindset from skills-based lessons can be a challenge. Two educators with K-12 experience will share how they approach the new national standards that may make them easier to digest and offer suggestions for using the new standards to plan your curriculum.

Teachers in their first few years of teaching are invited to connect with other newbies and discuss pertinent issues and share ideas. We will create a resource drive for you to access and discuss mentorship and other resources available through KAEA.

In this workshop you will use math as a tool to "build" a mandala. Math terminology and tools introduced at the 4th/5th grade level and utilized through life will be reviewed and applied to paper. You will use this structure for your own creativity.  A natural way to bring STEAM into the art room.

Hands on- Use Citra Solv cleaner to manipulate paper to create a beautiful mixed media work of art. Simple enough to implement into any middle school or high school class, could potentially be used in elementary school with some modifications. Everything you'll need to create a complete work of art using a few additional mixed media techniques such as stencil, texture paste, etc.

Meredith Radke-Gannon    Lori Jones    Kansas Junior Duck Stamp: Conservation & Competition    40 minutes    Elem, MS, HS

The Great Plains Nature Center and HS Art Teacher, Meredith Radke-Gannon, will present how to combine conservation of wildlife, waterfowl, and art. Art teachers can show their students from ages 1st-12th how important preservation of our nature is. In this presentation, you will be able to learn about field trips to the GPNC, conservation activities on-site and virtually, waterfowl nature check-out boxes, and the exciting competition and prizes the center provides. This competition is open to any Kansas school. Sketching time and art supplies will be available for your use.

Theresa Shetlar-Logan    Introduction to Weaving    40 minutes    $3.00    All levels

In this workshop you will learn the basics of tapestry weaving while creating a small sample using multiple colors. Weaving can often be meditative with its repetition and connection to the media through touch. You will learn how to create patterns, change colors, and finish off your design. Come for a relaxing fun time and learn a new technique that fits with all levels. Materials will be provided for you along with instruction to take home.

Shannon Wedel    May the Course Be With You: Organizing Your Lessons & Developing a Plan    40 minutes    All levels

This workshop will focus on tips and strategies for planning out your year. Getting lessons organized and developing a structure that will help you focus on what you want and need to teach, and making sure you accomplish it. The focus of the examples will be elementary, but the content can be used at any level.

Session 4B- Friday October 29th 3:50-4:30 pm:

Elia Brown    Supporting the Whole Student: Bringing Social Emotional Learning into the Art Classroom    40 minutes    All levels

Learn easy tips and tricks to incorporate Social Emotional Learning into the Art Classroom including mindfulness activities, emotional processing and restorative practices, art therapy based prompts and leaving space for choice and personal narrative in art lessons.

Theresa Shetlar-Logan    Post Pandemic Reflections on what worked from the students perspective    40 minutes    MS, HS

In this workshop I will present findings from my research created spring 2021. I created a google form and had students in the art classes answer questions on what they enjoyed, thought worked well, which platform they preferred and how the arrangement of the classroom affects their learning. We will look at the research and the comments made by students then talk about things that worked and how to implement that in the classroom but without adding more to our already full teaching plate.

Sierra Rose McCloskey    Katie Rice & Zoe Vincent    Appreciating Others Through Collaborative Art, a Cinderella Story    40 minutes    All levels

Workshop participants will learn about college students facilitating a collaborative art project with a museum, community members and seniors in a residential community isolated during Covid. Using Elizabeth Layton’s Cinderella for inspiration, participants were given a postcard-sized section of a coloring book-like rendition to decorate. The postcards were sent to an isolated senior community who completed their own squares of the puzzle, and put the puzzle together. This resulted in a creative re-creation of art, learning about Layton’s late-in-life learning and healing through art and intergenerational dialogue. Problems and solutions in creating a collaborative artwork with many diverse participants will be discussed.

Session 4C- Friday October 29th 3:00-4:20pm:

Jessica Conner    Zentangle Sgraffito    80 minutes    $5.00    MS, HS, Museum

Participants will get a quick hands on demonstration on low-tech, easy-peasy sgrafitto using Zentangle patterns on leather hard white earthenware. The presenter will also show how to create simple tools for carving as well as other tips and tricks for keeping leather hard trays in the Goldilocks zone. This lesson is a winner for both middle school and high school students.

How to make design assignments more than just a final project. If practicing scales is meant to make you a better musician, then design assignments should be able to make your students more creative and knowledgeable artists. The design itself is not the final assignment. Participants will take home examples and ideas of how to incorporate design into their curriculum.

Jessica Conner    “Mini” Dangos: Large Coil Vessels based on the work of Jun Kaneko    80 minutes    MS, HS, College, Museum

Participants will learn about Jun Kaneko’s large ceramic works he calls “dangos." The presenter will demonstrate her techniques for guiding high school-aged students in creating a closed coil built form with tips and tricks surrounding surface design and firing schedules. This lesson provides opportunity for cross curricular exploration as students learn to use simple algebra to scale up their maquette.

The connection between wellbeing and handwork, particularly using textile processes, has been well documented in several studies. Handwork has also been associated with the development of resilience. In this workshop we will discuss the characteristics of weaving that may lead to stress and anxiety reduction as we make several small weavings.

Katie Morris    Plains Ledger Art & Personal Expression Through Mixed Media Artwork    80 minutes    All levels

Come learn about the history and characteristics of Plains Indians Ledger Art as well as contemporary ledger artists. This lesson was originally taught to 2nd graders but the presenter will share ideas for adapting for other grade levels. The hands-on portion is about visually documenting events in your life so you are encouraged to bring personal ephemera to use in a mixed media work of art. Maps, letters, ticket stubs, etc. work great but you can bring copies if you don’t want to use originals, or just use the presenter-provided materials!

Lynn Felts    Martha Fitzwater    Speed Drawing    80 minutes    HS, College

This workshop is a take-off on speed dating. Participants will rotate around tables of various objects and media. Every 15 minutes teachers will move. This was used by Lynn to start her drawing classes. It gets students into a Zen, more focused mood, for their major projects. It provides a quick easy way to introduce many media, in a short period of time in less threatening way. This can be used as “board work” as students expect this every time they come into class. It’s an alternative to the sketch pad assignments.

Wendy Ping    Personal Identity: Creating an Individualized Logo with Gelli Arts Monoprinting    80 minutes    $2.00    MS (NEW TIME SLOT)

What is identity? Middle schoolers are searching for identity, the person they are and the person they want to be. This lesson is geared towards middle school, identity, and making artwork meaningful. In this workshop, you will respond to artwork, connect the artwork to your daily identity, create a three layer Gelli-Arts personal logo monoprint and then present the final product. The Gelli-Arts monoprinting block will be yours to keep after the session.

Lynn Felts    Martha Fitzwater    Plein Air Painting   2 hours  $10.00 at Botanica, the Wichita Gardens
Participants will go to Botanica, the Wichita Gardens, to draw with a focus on enlargement in a Georgia O'Keeffe style and relax and enjoy the fall foliage! Admission is included in this session and members can stay until close. It is recommend you bring chalk pastels, pastel paper, a board, tape, wipes, a chair and any other supplies like rubber tip blenders you may already have. There will be limited supplies available for those who need them.

Lisa Mickey    The Art of Chocolate    2 hours    $95.00   at Cocoa Dolce
A truly unique experience! Lisa, our head chocolatier, will introduce herself and her role at Cocoa Dolce, talk a little bit about the company and then lead guests through the following hands on experiences:
Each participant will have the opportunity to create their own candy bars, 4 mini bars. They can paint them and then add nuts/fruit or caramel crisps to finish them off if desired. They will leave will a beautiful box filled with their 4 mini bars.
Chocolate tasting – Lisa will educate the group on four different types of chocolate: Ruby, Gold, 54% and White chocolate. She will teach the group the art of tasting chocolate.
Champagne Truffles – Lisa will demonstrate to the group how to roll their own truffles and they will each leave with a 6 piece box of truffles.
Chocolate Ganache (if time allows) – Lisa will demonstrate the process of making a chocolate ganache.
Lisa Mickey has been in the food industry for 20 years. She started working with Cocoa Dolce in 2009 and quickly developed a love for chocolate. After gained experience, Mickey took the steps to become a Professional Chocolatier in 2010. She is now the lead chocolatier and head of a production team that is continuously working behind the scenes innovating new flavors, recipes and designs for the Wichita-based shop.

Michaela Valli Groeblacher & Dr. Kim Stanley    Outside the Box and Inside the Cover     2 hours     $10.00    at The Fiber Studio
We will begin by presenting our thoughts about the importance of teaching Creativity in the schools, followed by making a cover for a creativity journal. We will supply a plain notebook for each participant and a variety of handmade paste papers and other decorative embellishments (maybe "fibers" from the Fiber Studio), and all the necessary tools and glue to make the cover. Kim will guide the group how to "be" or "get" into the book in a fun and pleasurable way.

Ted Adler    "Out of the Round" Altering Wheel Thrown Pottery    2 hours    on WSU campus
This session will explore techniques for creating dynamic and asymmetrical pottery forms both on and off the wheel. Clay and basic pottery tools will be provided. We will also explore some use of templates for additions like spouts, handles, etc. and if time allows, demonstrations of throwing larger, compound pots.

Kate Pepper    Mosaic Workshop and Studio Tour    2 hours    $10.00    at Monart- The Art Park
Join us for a campus tour and fun mini mosaic workshop! Make a small decorative piece of artwork or an ornament to take home. Class fees are $10 and include a wooden shape to decorate and all the fun embellishments and tile. Great way to wrap up the conference and socialize with your friends!
We use the patented Monart Drawing Method outlined in the popular "Drawing with Children" book by Mona Brookes. We would be happy to answer any questions about this great method which is perfect for a new teacher or someone wanting to focus more on drawing skills in class and is not sure where to start.

Docents will be available for small guided tours of the Wichita Art Museum with information on services for school groups, followed by free time to tour the various collections. Admission is free!

Ulrich Art Museum Staff    Exhibit Tour and Campus Outdoor Sculpture Collection Walking Tour    1-2 hours    at WSU- Ulrich Museum
Come check out the current exhibit at the Ulrich Art Museum with docents available to answer questions. Afterwards, you can check out one of the largest campus outdoor sculpture collections in the US on a self-guided tour.

Emily Christensen    WSU School of Art and Design and Creative Industries Tour    80 minutes    WSU Campus
Emily will tour participants around the WSU ADCI facilities and answer questions about different programs available for students. A great opportunity to learn information about the school and its programs.

Marco Hernandez    Jocelyn Lechuga    Monotype Printing    80 minutes    $10.00    WSU Campus
This workshop will cover the Printmaking process of Monotype printing. Participants will learn how to make one of kind color prints using a traditional printing press and plexiglass as the plate. Safe and non-toxic water-based inks will be used at this workshop.

Beth Janssen    Fun Ideas in Jewelry Making    80 minutes    $10.00    WSU Campus
This class will utilize non-traditional techniques to create fun jewelry. Techniques covered include (but are not limited to) shrinky dinks and small-scale resin.
